Learn about reciprocity with institutions in Ohio, Kentucky, and other states in the Midwest.
Indiana has excellent public and private colleges and universities, as do our neighboring states of Ohio and Kentucky. But what if you are enrolled at a college or university in:
- Western Ohio or northern Kentucky and want to take a course or two at an Indiana school or completely transfer to an Indiana college or university?
- Indiana and need to take classes at a nearby school in Ohio or Kentucky? Or take distance education courses or programs in another state?
- Another Midwestern state and plan to attend school here in Indiana?
Transferring credits to or from an out-of-state school is no small task. That’s why Indiana has established reciprocity agreements with participating counties in Ohio and Kentucky. According to the Indiana-Ohio Reciprocity Agreement, students from participating counties in western Ohio can attend programs offered by a participating institution of higher learning in eastern Indiana, and vice versa. And with the Indiana-Kentucky Reciprocity Agreement, students from participating counties in northern Kentucky and southern Indiana enjoy a similar reciprocity agreement.
In addition, Indiana is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA). SARA is a voluntary agreement among its member states and U.S. territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of college distance-education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by colleges based in another state.
Want to lower your out-of-state tuition rate?
The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) is a multi-state reciprocity program that reduces tuition rates for out-of-state students attending participating institutions.
Through the MSEP, participating public institutions agree to charge students no more than 150% of the in-state resident tuition rate for specific programs and participating private institutions offer a 10% reduction on their tuition rates.
